The Electoral College Must Go

Fact: Trump received more votes from Californians than he did from voters in any other state (go ahead, look it up). But the 5.9 million votes he received from them may as well have been zero. Indeed, they will result in ZERO electoral votes for him.

Fact: Trump received fewer votes from Texans than he did from Californians. Yet he will receive 38 electoral votes from Texas.

Fact: Trump received 500,000 more votes from Californians than he did from voters in: Arkansas, Mississippi, Kansas, Nebraska, Idaho, West Virginia, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Alaska and Maine’s 2nd district — COMBINED (go ahead, do the math — I did.) Those states will give him 48 votes in the electoral college — more than 20% of the total electoral votes he’ll receive in all.

So, let’s review:

5.9 million votes in CA = 0 electoral votes

5.89 million votes in TX = 38 electoral votes

5.34 million votes across 12 states = 48 electoral votes

Fact: The Electoral College is an absurd, antiquated, anti-democratic way to elect the President of the United States.

I say this as an American interested in maintaining our democracy, not as a Democrat interested in electing Democratic Presidents (note: Biden will win by a larger percentage in the electoral college than he did in the popular vote; I still think it’s stupid.)

Opinion bordering on Fact: The Electoral College must be abolished or American democracy will die.
